LOUISVILLE, KY. — Fern Creek High School was cleared around 2:05 p.m. after shots were fired in the building.
Multiple Jefferson County Sheriffs’ Deputies and Louisville Metro Police officers are on the scene after a confirmed report from MetroSafe dispatchers just after 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Students were told to exit the building with their hands up as shots were fired on campus.
JCPS (Jefferson County Public Schools) confirmed one student was injured and is at University Hospital. LMPD has reached parents of the injured student. The school, located at 9100 Fern Creek Road, was still on lockdown as of 2:15 p.m. Nearby Fern Creek Elementary School also was on lockdown.
WHAS 11 Renee Murphy said two students saw someone on campus with a gun.
The parent of one student talked with Renee and said her son called her when the shooting took place. The parent said her son heard the shooting and he said he heard several shots fired. According to texts from her son, the parent told Renee Murphy someone was shot in the stomach and the leg.
A WDRB reporter says that the victim is a student and is suffering from non-life threatening injuries. She says that the parents of the student have been notified. The Louisville reporter says that the shooter has not been located.
LMPD: Gunman is still at large after student shot at Fern Creek High School
From Wave 3 News: One shot was fired in a third-floor classroom at about 1 p.m. The student was rushed to a hospital and was being treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. The parents of that student have been notified and the family is together at the hospital now.
Parents are being reunited with students right now at the tennis court at Fern Creek park.
It’s not clear who the suspected shooter is, nor is it known what preceded the gunfire.
As of 4:30 PM, suspect has been taken into custody.
The teen, described only as a 15 or 16-year-old black male, was captured at an apartment complex in the 5700 block of Oxford Place, which is northwest and within walking distance of the school and next to Fern Creek Park.
The shooting victim had been taken to University Hospital and was reportedly reunited with his family. The exact extent of the injuries wasn’t clear Tuesday afternoon.
