Diane Foley, mother of U.S. journalist who was beheaded by ISIS militants said she was, “embarrassed and appalled” over how the U.S. government handled her son’s case.

Foley claimed she was threatened with prosecution if her family raised money to free James, and for her criticism of the Obama administration. She was horrified by the threats and sought legal counsel.

“I think our efforts to get Jim freed were an annoyance” to the U.S. government, Foley told CNN.

U.S. officials told the Foleys, “not to go to the media,” that the “government would not exchange prisoners,” or carry out “military action” to try to rescue her son, she said.

“We were just told to trust that he would be freed somehow, miraculously.”

“Jim was killed in the most horrific way. He was sacrificed because of just a lack of coordination, lack of communication, lack of prioritization,” she said.

Foley said, rather bluntly, “Our country let Jim down.”

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, later responded to Foley’s testimony by first complimenting her. “She is an extraordinary woman and did an amazing job on behalf of her family to try and bring Jim (James Foley) home safely,” said Rice.

Rice went on to say that she, along with other U.S. officials, worked very hard to support Diane Foley and to rescue her son.

Before James Foley became a journalist he was a teacher at Lowell Elementary School in Phoenix, Arizona. He is fondly remembered by his students.
