*UPDATED* Police officer wounded & person killed in Florence, Kentucky motelPosted by Editorial Staff on December 2, 2014
FLORENCE, Ky – Substation II located on Dream Street in Florence, Ky is an eatery frequented by politicians and well known athletes. It is not uncommon to go in for a sub and walk out with an autograph too. The activity there on Tuesday was slightly different and far less celebratory.
Located across from the Super 8 motel, known to be frequented by a less savory clientele, the employees and visitors at Substation II found themselves going into lock down as the scene from an action film unfolded outside.
Several witnesses noticed Lt. Roger Allen stumbled from the Super 8 Motel around 11:50 a.m. in the 7900 block of Dream Street with blood covering his face. He had a laceration to his head and was taken to University Hospital in Cincinnati.
Allen, a 13 year veteran of the Florence Police Department received the wound when he dove out of the way to take cover. Allen had responded to a call at the hotel regarding drug trafficking. When he showed up three men opened fire. Upon taking cover he was able to return fire. It is unclear at this time if he killed the unidentified assailant or if the man took his own life. The other suspects were removed from the hotel in handcuffs at 12:20pm.
Some guests at the hotel were relocated via transit bus and given food and assistance by the Red Cross. Other guest chose to make other accommodations.
Several small business owners have contacted the city of Florence previously regarding the drug trafficking issues. You can sit in the local businesses and watch drug deals go down owners have said. Many of these small business owners are saying this most recent incident could cost their businesses thousands of dollars, because the drug dealers are being allowed to drive their customers off the street with incidents like this most recent shooting.
Last year, the dismembered body of a 19 year old female was found in the dumpster of the hotel.
It is a very sad situation given that just a few yards away is a VA facility taking care of our service members in need.
