What the Duck? A&E Suspends Duck Dynasty’s Phil RobertsonPosted by J Craig on December 19, 2013
The A&E Network has recently suspended star Phil Robertson of the hit TV show ‘Duck Dynasty’ indefinitely over his recent comments on homosexuality in GQ Magazine. Duck Dynasty is cable television’s biggest hit and has shattered many records for viewers, but that didn’t stop executives at A&E to make the harsh decision on Wednesday to suspend the Dynasty Dad. Duck Dynasty has become a breakout hit for A&E, regularly luring 9 million-plus viewers.
Phil made the following statement when asked a question in GQ: “It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”
The following statement was made by the A&E Network: “We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty. His personal views in no way reflect those of A&E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community.”
These recent actions from A&E are due to the backlash they received from GLAAD, a gay and lesbian rights group who quickly criticized the comments and called on the network to take immediate action. It just seems that our first amendment rights are always being questioned and taken away when they don’t fit what one particular group believes. If they don’t like or agree with the Dynasty stars, then change the channel or disregard the interview. Where are all these rights groups when heterosexuality is frowned upon from those who don’t participate in it? Crickets.
Where were GLAAD representatives when Alec Baldwin made gay remarks? Furthermore, Phil Robertson’s comments were not even anti-gay anyway. They were his personal beliefs and opinions on homosexuality. Here are comments from the Dynasty dad after the news broke: “I myself am a product of the ’60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the Bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”
This suspension is completely ridiculous because it clearly wants to silence the star and take away his rights to free speech. A&E is a private company, so they do have the right to suspend their employees for reasons they see fit, but this one truly touches the nerves of many fans sitting around the pond. Just as the network has the right to do as they like with their stars, fans of the biggest hit in television history also have the right to stop watching and supporting their product. It works both ways.
A&E Network made their bed. Now they must lie in it. They used their rights to make a decision that worked for them. Just seems that freedom of speech is no longer a thing. The real question is this:
So, which network is going to take on Duck Dynasty’s family? One that wants big ratings.

One that wants big ratings and one that believes that a man can voice his opinion about his personal religious beliefs without catering to a group who may be offended. These offended groups constantly preach tolerance for gay rights, but not for Christians expressing honest answers to questions asked of their faith. Does A&E as a private company have the right to fire and/or suspend Phil Robertson or any other star that isn’t abiding by their policies? Of course they do, but it doesn’t mean it’s the right call simply because they are only doing so because a certain group was offended. Again, freedom of speech is no longer a thing.
